Managing both the Nebraska Art Association collection from as early as 1888 and the University of Nebraska collection that began in 1929, The Shelden Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden also holds more than 12,000 pieces of art in different forms of media displayed within its proximity. Their broad and unique collection of American art pieces include American Impressionism pieces, abstractsm Abstract Expressionism, plus landscape and still life themed pieces from the 19th century paired with collections that are more pop, minimalism, and contemporary.
The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery’s Sculpture Garden also contains a collection that is just as astounding as the gallery’s itself. Visitors can find over 30 monumental sculptures displayed for their viewing pleasure. Majestic works by Gaston Lachaise, David Smith, William Tucker, Jacques Lipschitz, Mark di Suvero, Richard Serra and Michael Heizer are only a some of the pieces that one can find in this historic part of Lincoln Nebraska. There will also be a new establishment called The Stuart P. Embury American Art Research Library soon that will exist to complement their existing research library. The Stuart P. Embury American Art Research Library will be home to 10,000 volumes documenting American art history.
About 20 exhibition programs are run annually at the The Shelden Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden. These exhibition programs mostly focus on displaying American art, and are organized and facilitated by the The Shelden Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden’s curatorial staff. Institutional peers also take part and organize several exhibitions annually, with The Shelden Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden serving as their regular venue. Symposiums, workshops for kids, lectures, talks and other educational programs are also created in place to work in conjunction with several of their exhibitions.
